Election Act Changes Introduced
Bill 43, Election Amendment Act, 2019, was introduced in the Legislative Assembly on October 31, 2019.
The Bill includes a number of substantial changes to the Election Act. Amongst other provisions, the Bill allows for:
- greater use of technology to administer voting, including electronic voting books, ballot printers, and tabulators
- provisional voter registration for 16 and 17-year-olds, so that they are automatically added to the voters list when they turn 18
- expanded access to data sources for Elections BC to update the voters list, and
- an extended campaign period for snap general elections.
If the Bill is passed by the Legislative Assembly, Elections BC will require 18 to 24 months to implement the changes.
