Elections BC is looking for local leaders to serve as District Electoral Officers (DEOs) and Deputy District Electoral Officers (DDEOs). DEOs and DDEOs plan for, manage, and administer provincial general elections, by-elections and other events. As local representatives of the Chief Electoral Officer in their assigned electoral district, DEOs and DDEOs play a critical role in ensuring voters and stakeholders experience an impartial, fair, accessible, and inclusive electoral process. In delivering EBC’s mandate, they are role models of EBC’s values, ethics, and behaviours, and must always act respectfully and represent EBC positively. They must establish and maintain decorum and a positive, responsive, transparent and accountable culture.

The next provincial general election in B.C. is scheduled for October 2024. While general elections are scheduled to take place every four years, they can occur before a scheduled date. By-elections and other on-demand electoral events may also be held at any time. DEOs and DDEOs ensure that Elections BC is continually ready to deliver any electoral event in their electoral district when required.

Following changes to the Election Act in 2019 and the 2020 Provincial General Election, Elections BC has modernized the voting process. The changes include using electronic tabulators to count paper ballots and laptops to look up voters and cross them off the voters list. The changes make voting faster and easier. Be part of the most significant update to B.C.’s electoral legislation in over 25 years!

The work of a DEO or DDEO calls for broad management experience; strong planning and organizing skills; comfort with computer technology and office automation; expertise in material, human and financial resources management; and leadership of a diverse workforce. DEOs and DDEOs must have project management skills, excellent judgment and stamina to complete all the tasks of an election within a very short and specific time period. In return, the work is varied, challenging and rewarding.

DEO and DDEO opportunities appeal to applicants who can commit part-time hours towards event readiness, have the energy and flexibility to work more than full-time during an election period, and want to contribute to democracy by leading a diverse team towards a shared goal.

Elections BC is an independent, non-partisan Office of the Legislature responsible for administering electoral processes in British Columbia in accordance with the Election Act, Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, Recall and Initiative Act, and Referendum Act.
