The right to run for office in a provincial election is guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Anyone who meets the requirements of the Election Act can be a candidate.
In British Columbia, candidates must file nomination papers with Elections BC to appear on a ballot. Candidates must appoint an individual to act as their financial agent, or act as their own financial agent, and must file an election financing report with Elections BC after an election.
All financial transactions in relation to the election campaign must go through a separate campaign account. Click here (PDF) for a letter explaining the legislated requirements, which can be provided to a savings institution if needed.
