Key Dates for the 2018 General Local Elections

Election period
The period that begins on January 1 and ends on the 29th day before General Voting Day.
Monday, January 1, 2018 – Friday, September 21, 2018
Nomination period
The period for local election officials to receive nominations.
Tuesday, September 4, 2018 – Friday, September 14, 2018
Campaign period
The period that begins on the 28th day before General Voting Day and ends at the close of voting on General Voting Day.
Saturday, September 22, 2018 – Saturday, October 20, 2018
General Voting Day Saturday, October 20, 2018
Campaign financing disclosure statement filing deadline Friday, January 18, 2019
Campaign financing disclosure statement late filing deadline with $500 late filing fee Monday, February 18, 2019

New Rules for the 2018 General Local Elections

The Local Elections Campaign Financing Act has been amended to change the campaign financing rules for local elections in B.C. These changes apply to the 2018 General Local Elections that will be held on October 20, 2018. Read this bulletin (PDF) for more information. Contribution limits will be in effect for the 2018 General Local Elections. The contribution limits generally apply as follows:

  • An eligible individual may contribute up to $1,200 per year per campaign to an unendorsed candidate. As an exception, an unendorsed candidate may contribute up to $2,400 in 2018 for use in their own campaign.
  • An eligible individual may contribute up to $1,200 per year per campaign to an elector organization and its endorsed candidates. As an exception, a group of endorsed candidates may collectively contribute an additional $1,200 in total in 2018 for use in the campaign of the elector organization and the endorsed candidates.

Expense limits apply to the 2018 General Local Elections. Expenses limits, established by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and Ministry of Education, will be available by April 30, 2018. An expense limits look-up tool will be published on our website when the limits are available.
